1. Who we are
BASIC HUMAN NEED ("we", "us") is a free platform based in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, where people post what they need help with and others offer help. We are responsible for deciding how the personal data described here is used.
This policy covers the website basichumanneed.com and our Android app. The Android app is a thin wrapper around the website: it does not add any advertising or analytics tools, and it may only ask your permission to show notifications.
By creating an account and using the platform, you agree to this policy along with our Terms of Service.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account: your full name, email address and password. Passwords are handled by our login provider and stored in hashed form; we cannot see your password.
- Profile (optional): phone number, city, bio and profile photo (up to 2 MB).
- Posts: title, category, description, mode (online or in-person), city, and an optional payment amount or note.
- Offers and chats: the offer messages and chat messages you send to other users.
- Reports and support messages: reasons and details you submit when reporting a user or post, and anything you write in the Contact form (name, email, subject, message).
Information collected automatically
- Online status: whether you are currently online, and your most recent "last seen" time.
- In-app notifications: records of alerts we create for you, such as new messages and offers.
- Push notification details (only if you allow notifications): a push subscription ID, your browser or device type, and your account ID so notifications reach the right person. Our notification provider may also receive technical details such as language and approximate location derived from your IP address.
- Technical logs: IP address, browser and device information, and request logs, which our hosting and database providers keep for security and reliability.
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your precise (GPS) location. The city on your profile or post is typed in by you.
- We do not access your contacts, microphone, SMS, or files. When you upload a profile photo, you pick that one image yourself.
- We do not process payments and do not collect card, UPI or bank details. Any payment is a private matter between you and the other person.
- We do not use advertising IDs, ad networks, or third-party analytics tools.
3. How we use your information
- To create and secure your account and log you in.
- To show your posts, let others send you offers, and enable private chat.
- To send you notifications about messages, offers and important updates.
- To review reports, prevent spam, scams and misuse, and keep the community safe.
- To reply to your support requests.
- To fix bugs, keep the service reliable, and comply with the law.
We process your personal data on the basis of your consent, which you give when you sign up and use the platform, and for limited legitimate uses permitted by Indian law, such as security and legal compliance. We do not sell your data, do not use it for advertising, and do not make automated decisions about you or build profiles of you.
4. What other people can see
- Public: the posts you publish (title, description, category, mode, city, payment note) are visible to anyone who visits the platform, together with your name and profile photo.
- Your profile: other users can see your name, photo, city, bio and your active posts.
- Online status: other users can see whether you are online, or when you were last seen, for example in chats and profiles.
- Chats: messages are visible only to you and the person you are chatting with.
- Not shown to other users: your email address and phone number are not displayed to other users in the app.
Chat messages are not end-to-end encrypted. They are stored in our database and are not read by us as a matter of routine, but we may review them if needed to investigate a report, protect someone's safety, secure the platform, or respond to a lawful request.
6. Push notifications
Notifications are optional. We ask for permission through your browser or Android system prompt, and you can choose "Maybe later". You can turn notifications off at any time in your browser settings, or in your phone's app notification settings. If you turn them off, the app still works; you just will not get alerts.
7. Local storage, cookies & offline cache
- Login session: your login token is kept in your browser or app storage so you stay signed in. It is not used for tracking or advertising.
- Preferences: a small setting remembers if you dismissed the notification prompt.
- Offline cache: the app saves its pages, styles, scripts and logos on your device so it loads faster and opens even on a weak connection.
- Notification provider: OneSignal may keep its own identifier in your browser storage to deliver push notifications.
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. You can clear this data any time from your browser or phone settings; you will simply be logged out.
8. Retention & deletion
- We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active.
- You can delete your account yourself at any time from Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your profile, posts, chats and messages.
- After deletion, a limited amount of information may remain for a short time in backups, and we may keep records of reports or support messages where needed for safety, legal compliance or dispute resolution.
- Data held by our service providers is removed according to their own retention practices. If you would like help with this, write to us.
- If you cannot access the app, email us from your registered address and we will delete your account for you.
9. Security
Data is sent over HTTPS, and our providers encrypt stored data and protect it with access controls. Passwords are stored in hashed form. Still, no online service is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please use a strong, unique password and never share it with anyone.
If we become aware of a data breach that affects you, we will inform you and the relevant authorities as required by law.
10. Your rights & choices
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and other applicable Indian law, you can:
- Access information about the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct or update it. Most details can be changed in Profile → Edit Profile, and email or password in Settings.
- Erase it by deleting your account (see section 8).
- Withdraw consent at any time, for example by turning off notifications or deleting your account.
- Nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to do so.
- Raise a grievance with our Grievance Officer (section 14). If it is not resolved, you may approach the Data Protection Board of India as provided under the Act.
To use any of these rights, email us at basic-human-need562@zohomail.in. We usually reply within 24–48 hours and aim to resolve requests within 30 days.
11. Age limit
BASIC HUMAN NEED is meant for people aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, please tell us and we will delete it.
12. International transfers
Some of our service providers run servers outside India, so your data may be processed and stored in other countries. We choose providers that use reasonable security safeguards, and we share only what is needed to run the service.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version is always on this page, with the "Last updated" date at the top. If we make a significant change, we will let you know in the app or by email.
